Monday 9-21-09 Acceleration

  1. Today we discussed acceleration. Acceleration is any change in speed or velocity of an object. The units for acceleration is meters per second squared. The equation for is the change in velocity divided by the time. Mr. Lane also performed a demonstration to help us understand. We also copied down a chart into our notes that went along with the demonstration. We also discussed the relationship between falling objets and acceleration. We also learned that all falling objects have the same acceleration. The value of acceleration for a falling object is 10 meters per second squared. The symbol for this value is "g". We also learned that when we are talking about falling objects we could use the equation g=delta V over t. Another thing we went over was a word problem. The question was, How fast is an object falling after 3 seconds. To answer this question we must complete the following:
    1. Identify the concepts:
    Speed or velocity(??), gravity
    2. Identify the units:
    t=3s, g=10m/s(2)
    3. Write symbols:
    t, g, v
    4. Find an equation:
    delta v= g x t
    5. Plug & Chug:
    delta v= 10 m/s(2) x 3s
    = 30 m/s
    At the end of the period we had to calculate how for an object is falling after 3 seconds. We will answer this question tomorrow during class.
