Thursday 10-1-09 Force mass and inertia

  1. Chapter 2: Newton's 1st law
    Notes
    Force (F): any push or pull on an object
    -force causes motion (acceleration)
    -force can stop motion (acceleration)
    -constant velocity= no acceleration a =0m/s^2
    =balanced (no net force) F=0N

    Net Force: all of the forces acting on an object added together
    Units: Newtons (N), Pounds (lb)

    Mass (m): amount of matter (stuff) in an object.
    Bigger objects usually means more mass
    Smaller objects usually means less mass
    Units: Kilograms (kg), Grams (g)

    Inertia: (In-err-sha)=the resistance to change in motion
    -Inertia depends on mass
    The more mass = more inertia
    100 kg=1x Inertia 600 kg=6x Inertia

    Assignment Instructions
    1) Use book to define Newtons 1st Law write in your notes
    2) Go to google, click on advanced search, then type the phrase Newtons 1st law, then the file type is shockwave flash
    3) then find a website and describe what is happening in the website
    4) Then go to the blog and blog about the website

    it talks about that the force applied both ways = 0.

    it gives you the meaning of newtons first law which is the velocity of an object remains unchanged unless acted upon by an unchanged force or an object on will will experience acceleration if acted upon by an unbalanced force.

  3. I found a cool powerpoint presentation regarding Newton's First Law of Motion. In the first slide, the law was defined. In the second slide, it showed a car crashing into a brick wall and the car stopping. In the third slide, it explains how this demonstration represents Newton's First Law of Motion. Newton's First Law states that an object in motion will stay in motion unless a force is applied. Because the brick wall stopped the car, the brick wall is the force that is being applied to the car.

    I saw a presentation that had a talking picture of Arnold. It explained how Newton discovered gravity. An apple fell on his head and he said gravity hurts. Also a ball will not move unless it has force applied to it. The ball only stops if friction or another force stops it.

    It said that newtons 1st law is any object in motion will stay in motion until acted upon by an unbalanced force.

    On this website Arnold taught me about Newton's 1st law. The law states that if a body is at rest or has a constant velocity, it will remain at rest or continue to have a constant velocity unless a force is acted upon the object. He also showed a demonstration using a ball. At first the ball is at rest, until the ball is pushed by a hand.

  7. Newton's 1st law is everybody continues in its state of rest, or of motion in a straight line at constant speed, unless it is compelled to change that state by a net force exerted upon it.

    it defines what newton first law is. also it gave me a demonstration with a blue car going in a constant speed and getting stopped by a wall.

  8. THe website i found has a definition for 3 laws. for Newtons first law it states that every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless external force is applied to it. It says that when an object is left alone it maintains a constant velocity.

  10. I found a powerpoint and in the first slide it gives the definition of Newton's 1st Law. Which is every object in a state of uniform tends to remain in the state of motion unless an external force is applied to it. In the second slide it talks about inertia. It also says that no force is needed to maintain the motion. Instead, forces is needed to stop the motion. It also has a picture to demonstrate it.

    A football is sitting on the ground at rest.
    The shoe kicks it, and the force is applied, the football moves.

    A grocery cart is sitting at rest, and doesn't move until the person pushes it.

    A car is driving by at a constant speed. But slows down when the force of the wind blows at it.

    A boat it sailing at a constant speed. But goes faster when the wind blows it.

    The airplane is going straight until the wind blows it down.

    The soccer ball goes in a straight line, until it is pushed up.

    velocity is a vector quantity- it has both magnitude and direction
    and then it gives me some examples:
    -acceleration in cars is the rate of change in velocity,
    -a change speed in speed,
    -a change in direction, and a change in both magnitude.

  14. i looked at some websites and they were very intrasting because it showed me the way force and mass and also gravity works all at the same time.

    on one website it showed this car going at diffrent speeds and how force and gravity affected that like this car for instance was going at 20 milesper hour but didnt do no effect but once it hit 70 mph the car fliped over and had a serious affect once it hit 80 mph.

    it was cool it defined newtons first law by stating that netans law is: every object in astate of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an externall force is applied to it

    it said that uniform motion has no friction
    it stated that when an object is left alone it maintains a constant velocity
